A private gallery of wearable art
Galleria de Carmen is a private gallery of wearable art, from sculptural bijoux to haute joaillerie, founded on a single conviction: jewelry is an extension of the body, the most intimate form a work of art can take.
We are a creative direction house with two rooms. The Atelier holds every piece the house creates, selects and directs, from one-of-one commissions to the collections. The Salon is where the house gathers: intimate conversations with collectors, makers and scholars, private appointments, and rare finds shown only in the room.
Long before we built cities, we made things by hand. To craft is to be human, and nowhere is this older, or more patient, than in jewelry. The house was born in Korea, and every piece, whether conceived as an idea, made by hand, or found and chosen by the house, is a step on the way back to that origin: a goldsmithing lineage that reaches back to the kingdoms of Baekje and Silla, where artisans fused grains of gold finer than seeds into crowns and earrings that still hold their light, fifteen centuries on. That same devotion to the smallest detail, the belief that what is nearly invisible matters most, lives in every piece the house creates today.
The gallery bears the vision of its founder and creative director, Carmen Kang, an artist before she was a jeweler. Her practice began early, with four solo fundraising exhibitions, the first while she was still in middle school. It has since moved between forms and causes: recyclable mixed-media sculpture with the UN Environment Programme and WFUNA's "Not Under the UN Flag" campaign, performance art tracing the stages of a life, its agony and its grace, and the translation of Oswaldo Guayasamín's Seoul exhibition catalogue (2021), carrying an artist's testimony of human suffering across languages.
Thus the house is committed to ethical practice, and to a quiet inquiry: recovering what has been lost, our connection with nature and with one another. A hand that crafts, a body that wears, an eye that recognizes. These are how we remember we are human.
